Red Tide forces closure of Boston Harbor shellfish beds

Shellfish beds in Boston Harbor that were closed for the first time in 36 years could soon reopen as the red tide threat diminishes. State shellfish biologist J. Michael Hickey says toxic algae counts have been dropping steadily and if the trend continues, the beds could reopen to clammers as early as Wednesday. The last time Boston Harbor was closed to shellfishing was in 1972. The red tide also forced the closure of shellfish beds from Newburyport to Cape Cod. The state reopened some areas of the North Shore last week. Hickey estimates that the closings have cost shell fisherman in Massachusetts about $1 million over the last six weeks.
